The members of the Sustainable Food Alliance of BC are major contributors to the $35 billion food industry in B.C., a significant part of which is located within Metro Vancouver. Industry members of the Alliance employ over 4,000 in the region and in total, our members employ over 20,000 people across BC. As a core component of Metro Vancouver’s sustainable food system, the Alliance represents the primary participants whose actions and activities carry out Metro Vancouver’s food and organic waste policies.
The Alliance supports the “whole systems” thinking of Metro Vancouver’s Sustainable Regional Initiative and management plans and wants to be part of the responsible, responsive and collaborative vision for governance that Metro’s strategy aspires to. The Alliance accepts that our members have a responsibility to be proactive in the effective and efficient implementation of the relevant aspects of Metro Vancouver’s strategic management plans. We value a collaborative approach, and look forward to ongoing and open consultation. We work very closely with provincial government ministries in support of strategies for economic growth and job creation, protection of the environment and a strong agricultural sector and look forward to strengthening the link between regional and provincial goals.
The members of the Alliance represent different sectors of the food industry and each have industry specific goals and objectives. The common issue which forms the focus of the Alliance is maintaining a strong and lasting circular food economy for British Columbians and doing so in a way that is not in disharmony with an urban environment. The food system circle, represented by the activities of the Alliance members, utlizes products that would otherwise burden landfills while supporting an economically viable local food system.
